A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Hi. A No. 1 MK III* is a No. 1 MK III with at least one modification that wasn't enough to warrant a new Mark. The modification in this case was removing the mag cut off and the auxiliary long-range sights according to the Imperial War Museum. (The "full magazine of cartridges in reserve for rapid-fire" is nonsense. The Brit Generals didn't trust their men. Thought they'd waste ammo.) So yes the barrels are the same. Gunparts lists used good condition barrels at $58.70US each. Might be an idea to ask 'em if they know a smithy.

Do not allow anybody to try changing the barrel who does not have the proper tools. (Don't tell him to buy 'em either. You'll pay for 'em and not get to keep 'em.). That'd be a barrel vise with the right bushing, the correct receiver wrench and proper head space gauges. No pipe wrenches or the like. It's very easy to twist an Enfield's receiver into an oddly shaped paperweight trying to change a barrel without the right tools. (Mostly it's the receiver wrench.) No idea who might have that anywhere, never mind anywhere close to you.
