Shooting the carbine

Hi all. Finally got to the range to shot my new carbine. Found 2 boxes of S&B ammo at a local indoor flemarket for a decent price. Never having shot a carbine I was pleasantly surprised about the lack of recoil, not much more than my 10/22. Was limited to 25 yards so was shooting about a foot high. Can't wait to get it out side and shoot it at longer range. Does anyone make a reliable 5 round magazine for the carbine? Thinking about using it for short range deer hunting this fall using soft point ammo. Thanks. Gork

Hi; 5 rd mags are available. I usually see some just before hunting season on ebay. I'm not sure about new manuf. as I still have my 30+ yr. old ones.

There are lots around that are cut down 15s and those are the ones I'd look for...they're around...

I couldn't help but notice that you mentioned...

If your measurement is fairly close, I would recommend you have a look at your sights on that particular carbine. Even if a Carbine is zeroed for 300yds., the bullet would print no higher than about 4.5" above point of aim at 25yds.

As for 5rd mags...many of the commercial carbines such as Universal, Iver Johnson, Plainfield etc. came with 5rd mags, then as mentioned, there are the ones made from cut down 15 or 30 rounders. They should be fairly easy to source out, even if you have to resort to ebay.

I've used a length of 1" x 2" by sanding the edges rounder to fit inside.

You are going to need to built up or replace the front sight. At 25 yards you should be shooting almost dead on; no more than 1 inch high. There are some products like plastic steel that you can use to add height to the front sight. It can be shaped easily with a file. Be sure you make it too high so you can slowly cut it down to the correct height. Its an easy process that take just a bit of time and patience.

Jakester and jimb16. Thanks for the advice about the sights. I'm thinking it's more me then the gun. I don't do well indoors under artificial light. Once I get up north to my outdoor range I'll find out how this rifle does with new ammo. The S&B ammo I was using where older boxes. Painter. Thanks for the link. Im going to modify a 15 rounder to a 5 rounder.

Gork, check you rear sight to make sure the peep isn’t all the way back at the 300 yard elevation. Push it forward to the 100 or 1.5 setting. You may find it prints closer to POA...?

Pretty sure I remember trying some Universal 5-rounders, which held only 4. They would not fit any of my carbines using a USGI trigger housing. Pass those up and pay the premium price for good 5-rounders. I have never purchased one of the metal 5-round magazines from anywhere that failed to work. Universals are polymer.

Flythecat. Thanks for the Info on the Universal mags. I don't mind paying the extra for good ones. I've got a few of the Korean mags on order. I think I'm going to try to block a 15 rounder to 5 rounds. If it's reliable I'll mark it as a 5 rounder and call it good. Gork
