    Problems assembling my M1 Garand

I took my M1icon out for spring cleaning and can't seem to get it right. I have followed the assembly guide and watched some videos, but I can't seem to pinpoint my problem. The gun seems to assembly ok, but I can't get the bolt to slide all the way back to load a clip. It stops with about an inch of the breach bolt exposed. Any suggestions on what' s wrong?

    I'd really appreciate some help!

Pull the trigger guard and drop the stock off the action. Check to see if there is anything blocking the rearward motion of the bolt in the back of the receiver.

If nothing is visible and still is not coming fully rearward, pull the op rod spring and see if that frees up rearward travel. If it still won't travel sufficiently rearward, then remove the op rod and slide the bolt by hand to make sure it can travel fully rearward.

Thanks. I know it will slide all the way back before I assemble it, but I'll take your advice and see if works.

I can remember when some guys in each squad could take the M1icon apart and put it back together blindfolded, they even would have a race as to the best time !

Rick, thank you so much! You pinpointed the problem. Your picture really helped. The operating rod catch was pointing down and catching the operating rod when I tried to pull the bolt back. I played with the operating rod catch until it was level with the pin installed and everything worked!

I really appreciate your help my friend!

One time when they were having a contest to see who could take it apart and reassemble the M1icon with the best time, I tossed in another follower arm and the man just threw it away
knowing he had the right parts already as he put the rifle back together.

IndyShark: what if I told you that I could remove the firing pin from an M1 rifle without taking the rifle apart and then put it back in ?

all you need to remove the firing pin is the M10 tool of early WW2 M1icon tool which is placed in the chamber and rotated to un-lock the extractor
and ejector and firing pin. Turn the muzzle up and shake the firing back out of the bolt. Rotated the chamber tool and lock the ejector and
extractor back into the bolt. Turn the muzzle up and shake the rifle until the firing pin falls through the bolt recess in the receiver.

To replace the firing pin carefully place in back in the receiver through the bolt recess in the receiver and shake it into the bolt and then unlock
the extractor and ejector with the tool and shake the firing pin all the way into the bolt and lock up the parts with the tool
