    Refurb with 1942 barrel

The rifle that my posted image will show is a Springfield 5.8mill receiver. The right receiver leg is electro-penciled 12-65. The barrel is upside down stamped S-A-8-42. I have also included images of the inside of the barrel and the upside down date of barrel manufacture stamp. I have included an image that shows the breech face of the barrel in the receiver. It appears to be "in the white". My obvious quandary is purely speculative. How did a 1942 barrel come to be placed on a 5.8mill Springfield receiver? I would like to hear what other members of the Garand collecting community think about how this may have come about. I don't believe I'll shoot this rifle in it's current configuration. I personally look at the barrel as a historical item. It's restoration upon a historically correct manifestation. of the M1 Garand would be to me a more desirable place for this barrel to reside. I would also like your thoughts on what you would do with a barrel that was made before Operation Torch in 1942.

    Refurb M1

My apologies. I'm using Imgur as a photo hosting site and am experiencing trouble in linking my images to this web-site. I've tried to show four images. I thought I did this by pasting the Imgur image site to my initial post. it doesn't show up in the posting. Perhaps I should manually enter the sites address rather than cutting or pasting. I'll keep trying. Thank you for your patience.

When the US Ordnance rebuilds M1 rifles , sometime a new barrel is required and drawn from stock. The supply of barrels could go back as far as WW2.
A few years ago the CMP sold new M1 barrels to the members and barrels dating back to WW2 were found,

Thanks for your offer to post the pics. I think I'll continue to learn how to do it myself. I should have investigated the posting pictures procedure more thoroughly prior to asking my questions. I'll be better prepared next time.-liketoshoot

A barrel can be put on by anyone, it's no problem...rifles are reconfigured every day. Yes it could have come from arsenal stocks or it could have been changed after the '65 date for the barrel that you see.
