There was walnut furniture available in Canadaicon for the Colt SP1 rifles and the SGW clones of the period, approx. late '80's early 90's to be exact. Yes, the rifles looked very nice in walnut, however, the top vent cutout tabs in the handguards broke just as easily as those in the glass fibre originals.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Very TRUE, the vents are very fragile. Finishing them required extra special care. And they would never hold up in a combat situation. But it sure smells good when the wood gets to smoking a little. She is my showboat stock. Most of my service rifles have a Sunday dress.

I would go with smaller, round holes for vents, not the larger, oblong type in the plastic hand guards. Just a thought.

There are several companies that make very nice wood sets and a couple that make weird modular looking wood sets with Rails and YUCK. IRONWOOD DESIGNS is who I ordered from because they offered the closest to the original as I could find. She is strictly for range time when she has her Sunday Dress on. All my rifles are shooters though so none of them are tucked away in a safe for long. They all have their own hunting time IN A WORKING STOCK.

That would be the only way I would think of owning that style of rifle
