I just saw an interview with a soldier who worked with Graves Registration and went ashore right after D-Day. He mentioned that the Germans didn't pick-up their dead so the American Graves Registration guys had to. He said that they established something like seventy-six temporary cemeteries in the area and interred the dead in them, then later were given the order to establish three major cemeteries so they had to go back and disinter all the bodies and move them to the new cemeteries. He said he saw things that a nineteen-year-old shouldn't see. Nevertheless he was a cheerful guy in the interview!

What AWFUL duty 
Maybe some guys preferred it to getting shot at, but I couldn't do it.

Easily the least enviable job any soldier can have, but in the greatest scheme of life, war and death, perhaps the most important.
I know every person I've known who has lost a love one on the field of battle is eternally grateful to them.
