L1A1 Butt Fitting

Ok need some help here. took out the screw in the middle of the plastic butt plate and the butt plate will NOT come off. The hole for the screw is not large enough to get the stock removal tool through. The plastic butt plate is buggered now because I thought it was glued and tried prizing it off but it seems to be fastened in the area of teh spring assembly. what am i missing here?

You're doing it right, there's a nose that's pressed in that is holding you. Here's a pic so you can see what's there...

yep right direction …. but you need to remove the Butt plug!!!!!! 32 years and it never gets old..... yes it really was called the butt plug ( or plug butt but that's not as funny )

Morning Skippy and Tankie. There was another classic in one of the other EMER's, to '.....shave the bush slightly in order to make insertion of the plunger easier........' They must sit round thinking of them. Or another for the Armourers Bench '..... the legs spread evenly to make the wench steadier in use...... It should have read ...to make the BENCH steadier.

Ok so the Butt plug (yes - still laughing) is simply secured by friction into the tube that the spring assembly runs through. its not glued or fastened in any other way?

the plug is just a push fit into the butt plate (and secured by the centre machine screw). the but plate usually has many burrs from impact with the regimental parade ground, these will stop the plug pulling out easily, a run round the edge of the butt plate/plug edge with a sharp blade should ease the removal of the butt plug

the butt plate is actually secured to the rifle with the return spring tube screw,,,,,

Im confused - in the picture above the plastic buttplate seems to be one part with the plug that inserts into the return spring tube.

That's correct, the butt plate is one one part.

No1 remove screw.
No2 use a small right angle hook to remove circular insert.
No3 You now have access to the return spring screw, simply unscrew ( holding pressure on) and withdraw the springs and screw. The plastic buttplate base forms the seat for the screw and comes away as a single unit.

Don't forget the small screw at the wrist and bobs your uncle....
