You may be confusing the extractor spring for the SMLE with the one for the No.4. They ARE distinctly different and as you describe.

"...Spring has seen better days..." Maybe, maybe not. $10.80US for a new repro($15.70 for a brand new one. $13.50 for a used unknown condition one.) at Gunparts.
"...long enough to hit the ejector screw..." OAL length doesn't matter. Case length does.
"...it's not ejecting spent cases..." It's most likely that you're not operating the bolt with enough, um, vigor.
Oh and the only difference between a Mk I/Mk I* and a Mk II is where the trigger connects to the receiver.
Thats weird because when i ended up replacing the spring for the claw it works just as it did when i bought it... Like new... Even with little to no vigor. Thanks anyways. Oh and about the spring seeing better days... It had no spring to it, i could literally push both ends together with minimal effort. Case length does matter... A fully intact cartridge doesnt start to fully eject until it hits the ejector screw in the back of the receiver... Atleast thats from my understanding. Please correct me if im wrong.

I own a smle and no4 mk2. There is a distinctive difference between the two springs. Thanks Brian for you assistance, i very much appreciated it. I ended up getting two NOS springs for $10 total.

I own a bunch of milsurp but a few of my favorites are my Lithgow smle 1942, Argentine 1909 engineer Mauser carbine and my newest favorite, my Swiss K11... It's a special rifle with a troop tag and the most accurate I own.
