Stock Cracks

Good Afternoon,

Looking for a good stockmaker who specializes in antique military stocks. I have an 1871 Ward Burton and an 1879 Winchestr-Hotchkiss both with cracks almost in the same location in their respcetive grips. Thanks, Randy

I wish you luck in your search.

Conscientious repair work is very time-consuming = expensive. A good stockmaker can make so much money producing a new fancy stock for a hunting rifle that he will probably not have much interest in repairing an old milsurp, however historically interesting it may be for us.

If you cannot find a stockmaker with the right kind of experience, you may well have to face up to the prospect of doing it yourself. May I suggest you search the "Restorer's Corner" forum, as there have been a number of useful contributions on stock repair over the years.

If you have all the wood pieces then talk to warpig here on the sight. I highly recommend his work. He can work magic repairing wood. He does all my repair work for the last few years.

I can say Jeff just did a fantastic job on a savage 1899 stock that was totally destroyed. Looks like new. Trust him on doing your repair work.
