Trying to date this Savage NO4 MK1* I just picked up.

Got a pretty dang good deal on it. Serial number is 66C**** with a B underneath it. I tried googling but didn't find much.

There's also what looks like a sideways sickle under the designation.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The sideways sickle is actually the US "flaming bomb" inspection stamp.

    Your rifle will be 1943.

Production ended near 1,100,000 in mid- late 1944.

Rather than adding anothe digit in front of the C letter prefix, they went back to 0c and added a 5th digit after the letter prefix.

The Savage-Stevens operations routing sheets show that the B was added as one of the last stages of work, but at present we don't know what it signifies.

I was guessing it would be somewhere in '43. So it's basically a stamp that failed to properly stamp? Interesting.

A local gun store had it listed on armslist for $400. Came with a Savage marked bayonet.
