    Picked up a Winchester

PI found this one for me. This is one from the first block SN1049220 and I waited a long time for it. The OC cartouche is on it's side and the SN is a mess but all the parts seem correct. ME is 1.5.
Stock, high wood, T shaped oiler aperture, big boxed WRA/GHD, OC cartouche.
Handguard R with a Z in the bottom.
Front sight, has the finger nail mark with swirls.
Rear sight, S on L side.
    Bolt, unmarked, blued.
Barrel, W 4-5 inches down and Winchester proof 7 inches down.
    Swivel & band, unmarked.
    Mag catch W in well.
T Housing, 1/2 w and 2 other letters R side rear, Trigger Guard has a X on bottom
    Hammer, R side W.
Sear, W on top no hole.
    Slide W in bottom.
    Recoil Lug. W on top.
    Butt plate, early Winchester.

Looks like the dies moved when they were trying to stamp that carbine. The serial is an overstamp. Probably done to correct a bad stamping on the first try. I've seen this a couple of times and not just on Winchesters. Stock markings look legit. The X on the bottom of the trigger guard is pretty normal although it could have been any letter. I've seen many different letters stamped there. The only thing that bothers me is the finish. It looks like it was reparked. What makes me think so is that none of the stampings show bare metal at the bottom and some were stamped AFTER the carbine was parked. Otherwise, it looks good. Would love to see some shots of the internals.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

The T code you posted pics of on Gunboards looks refinished too. The color on it is closer, though. It presents well and crisply but the color still doesn't look correct.
What do you make of the apparent punch mark on the barrel near the WP logo? There's also a small divot on the right of the rear dove tail which is where an adjustable sight sometimes contacts on install or removal.

That's is not a punch mark, it's a ding. I don't know what to make of the other mark under the rear sight, under magnification it looks like small dings in a line.

Ok. I've got a late proofed Winchester barrel with the WP visible above the high C bayonet band, and it has a very distinct punch mark. It's in between the WP and W. You wouldn't mistake this one for a ding. Haven't seen that on any other later or late Win barrels.

A totally revamped carbine including refinished/stained stock. May be 'correct' but is no way original.
'Really Senior Member' Especially since I started on the original Culver forum. That had to be about 1998.
