L1a1 Grease same as used fr the Bren ?

Is the grease that was used for the l1a1 rifle the same as that was used for the BREN GUN ? It came in 4.25 inches in length O.D. colored plastic tubes about 4oz. in weight .

You'll have to tell us what grease was identified on the tube. But generally speaking, the greases were interchangeable, such as XG279, 340 etc etc

The tubes of grease could be either:-

    GREASE, XG340, 3/4 oz. tube
    NSN: 1005-99-960-2483

GREASE, Graphite, XG-264, 3/4 oz. tube
    NSN: 9150-99-220-5175

Thanks for that KtK. There was always a bit of controversy regarding the later grease v the earlier grease. The old XG340 was actually a thick, pasty graphite grease - or grease made from graphite, with an oil mix that left it quite thick. The later 264 was actually graphited grease! In other words, it was another standard lubrication grease with graphite powder mixed. It had a runnier texture and, so said, not as effective, If you get a chance to squeeze a bit, have a look and feel.

With Bren return springs the 340 would stick like 5hit to a blanket as they say whereas the 264 (strange, I always remembered it as 249 but there you go...) got hot and runny. Ideal for mini ball-joints and all CV joints though

Don't forget the golden rule....... If it slides, it's graphite. If it rotates it's grease
