    Early Springfield 1903 restroation

I bought this nice four digit Springfield 1903 receiverAttachment 102914Attachment 102915Attachment 102916 from the CMPicon Auction about five years ago. The finish and condition look nice and I found a nice SA 2-18 dated barrel, also located a straight bolt that matched but it was a Rock Island bolt which is ok. The stock is a POD rebuild (Philippine Ordnance Depot) rebuild, The rest of the parts are also from this period.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. How it has both the POD and BA stamps, Benecia was called the Gateway to the Pacific. So in the docs you often seen shipments going to POD from BA and then later coming back to BA. So these two cartouches often go hand in hand.

I like the low numbers as well because they just have more history. Imagine if this one could talk!

Marines in the Pacific...China Marines... My great Uncle was a Marine from 1919 to 1921, I have the pics of him in Cartridge belt and M1903. One where they stopped in the river to water the horses during patrol in Santo Domingo city area. Wish he could have told me more about things but he "Couldn't remember'... I find that staggering as I remember all of it. He's been gone for probably 40 years now.

Did you ever pull his SRB records Jim? There is a pretty decent chance his rifle serial is in his file.

No...didn't think of it. I'm in Canadaicon and don't know how easy that would be. I don't have his SS number anyway...don't know if I could find it. I almost had his marksman's shooting medal but I guess it went to my uncle, his nephew when he died. He's been gone some years now too... It was strange how removed he was from it. Just a basic engagement, but like it didn't mean anything to him at all. Just a few stories and a small book of mostly picture postcards and some pics...

Anyway, I expect he had a nice early one like this, 1919-1921 or was it 1923? A basic engagement would have been three years?
    Regards, Jim

If he was in the US Military I put together a PDF guide to help you obtain yours or a family member’s military records and get the free set of replacement medals and awards.
