    Unmarked trigger housing....

I have a "Davidson" import Postal Meter w/an unmarked, fully milled trigger housing. Age looks commensurate w/the rifle. And if there were any to begin with, are there any identifying features for unmarked WW2 trigger housings? It's a nice rifle w an excellent crown and bore. Unlike many imports that (for whatever reason) have what I call a "blunderbus" crown i.e. you can drop a 30 cal. bullet right down into the barrel! I can get some pics if anyone can tell me what to a picture of.

    regards, m

How about some close-ups of the top, bottom, and both sides of the trigger housing? We can probably figure it out. - Bob

Two things to check on the T housing: if the hole in the inside of the trigger guard for the safety is an odd clover leaf shape intead of an oval, it is a winchester. Also check the top inside of the mag well. You might find a >u> there of you might find a small ordnance bomb on the bottom of the trigger guard. If either of these are present, then it is an Underwood.

Thanks Painter777, that's a super useful site... still I see some features from more than one type TH! Hopefully someone will know and if not, it's no big deal. It is what it is... a nice little rifle for what I paid for it! I wonder from whence it was imported? It's got repetitious Serial #s on the stock and receiver. Perfect bore and crown, that's one reason I bought it. Also got a flash hider and early barrel band. The stock is Winchester.

    thanks, mitch

    Wait Mitch...
    Don't overload old minds.
I have your Flicker album open.
The trigger housing is a Type III and has been fairly heavily sand blasted, probably why we can't see the marking....
But: When looking at the rear of the housing it has the milling we see from the National Lock for QHMC housings: NL-Q....
But the NL=Q's didn't have the Fish Hook milling from the ledge up the rear of the mag wall.
Yours has the Fish Hook. My best guess because of the milling style I see on the very rear spine of your housing is you have a SG (Saginaw Steering Gear) Type III housing.
Now I could be wrong... But I believe I've got it

Yours pictured below, look for the nearly blasted away letters SG stamped on the upper right rear... below the top receiver lug.
It could be stamped sideways with the G above the S in a vertical position. Not the norm, but sometimes seen this way.

    Look Close..... Real close

I don't recall ever seeing the serial number re-stamped on the receiver ring like yours.
I could contact Jim Mock (Web site about the trigger housings I passed to you) and the Carbine Collectors Club to see if they'd be interested in seeing and documented that serial #'s stamped location. They may have seen it before, I have not.
US Ordnance required that when a early flip sight was swapped out with a rear adj sight and it covered the serial # that the serial # be re-stamped forward of the rear sight on the receiver to be visible. This wasn't always done, but when it was it was between the frt of the rear sight and back of the bolt.... 'On the receiver'.

    Does the serial # match?

The Type I UI marked barrel band is a plus = $$, but for shooting I would stick with the Type III bayo band.... makes for a better shooter.
PLus if you remove the bayo band it will leave wear marks on the barrels finish and impressions in the stocks nose. Thus a tell tale that it once had it on there.
I only have 1 NPM and it is one of my favorite shooters.... of the few I shoot. Mine has a Marlin no date barrel with a (we call) NPM punch proof mark near the stamped P proof mark.
Nice looking grain on that stock.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

I swear that I see a sideways (vertical) SG when I zoom in on that same area that Charlie mentions. Also your hammer pin is in from the wrong side, it should be inserted from left to right.

I'm holding the SG trigger housing I have up for sale for comparison. They certainly look identical. I'd have to call it SG myself.
