Does anyone know what FNR stamped in the right side of a buttstock of a No4 means?

It couldn't be answered in the other thread about it, so doubt it will be in this one.

    Google suggests :

    "For No Reason"

There are several other possibilities :

Forestry and Natural Resources (various universities)
Fonds National de la Recherche (Frenchicon: National Fund for Research; Luxembourg)
Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (Germanicon: Agency for Renewable Resources)
Frais de Notaire Reduits (French; Reduced Notary Cost)
    Fast Neutron Reactor
    Funk Night Records (record label)
    File Name Record
    Ferredoxin NADP+ Reductase
    False Negative Rate
    Find and Replace
    Ford Nuclear Reactor
Fermetures Neuf et Rénovation (French renovation company)
    Future Net Revenue
    Friday Night Ride
    Full Needle Rib (knitting)
    Flexible Numbering Register
    Fixed Network Reconfiguration
    Final Notice of Recommendation (education)
Frequency Normalization Response (RF tuner gain calibration technique)
    Fumarate Nitrate Reductase Regulation

    I quite like

    'Friday Night Ride'
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

In the other thread I think the owner was hoping it stood for 'Frightfully New Rifle'

    Wink

I'm inclined to the False Negative Rate.

Methinks an enterprising REME craftsman found the sights on this rifle were slightly out of whack when it was in a training Battalion. It was found that the sights were OK, you just needed to sort out the difference between a low 6 O'clock hold, a high 6 and a centre hold. The difference being the 'perceived' level of colour the shooter sees between blade and target.

The Crafty, liking a joke, decided that A False Negative Rate actually meant a real positive rate, depending on how your looked at it.

    Or something like that...

    Got you thinking now, right?

Come one, be creative in showing me how off the mark I am!
Trying to save Service history, one rifle at a time...
