As a reminder the motion picture mentioned above - BITTER VICTORY - is set to air tonight, Friday, December 6 at 12 AM EST on the Turner Classic Movie channel. I have set my DVR to record it so we can find out just what Mr. Burton is planning to do with his Enfield revolver.

    Regards,
    Charlie

He ran out of ammo when he needed it.

And the question remains, "Why didn't they keep the horses?"

I tried watching it, and lost interest during the bar scene near the beginning.

Yeah, it was not a great film by any stretch. In some places it was hard to keep from nodding off.

It turns out that in this scene Burton is contemplating shooting a couple of wounded and dying soldiers, Germanicon and Britishicon. Just why that would be necessary is unexplained in the film, as is the order given to Burton to stay with the casualties.

The film has a number of such illogical twists and turns. And don't get me started on Ruth Roman, the love interest, who spends most of the film looking constipated.

Another oddity is the casting of German-born actor Curt Jurgens in the role of a South African Commando officer. His talents would have been used far better as a German officer who were mostly seen as cardboard characterizations.

On the positive side, the credits indicate that the British Ministry of Defense gave some assistance to the production of the film. Rather amazingly, it was filmed in Libya. The Commando force is armed mostly with Thompson SMGs. Not a STEN gun in sight nor any rifles or BREN guns. A genuine Kubelwagen is shown, along with a US halftrack dressed up as an Afrika Korps machine.

The script is a disaster so perhaps it is understandable why this film remains obscure. I am glad that I saw it but won't bother to see it again. Mystery solved.

    Regards,
    Charlie
