Michigan Antique Arms display this weekend.

Jon Ansley will be at the Michigan Antique Arms show this weekend with his Lee parts and a few No.1 and No. 4 rifles.

I always use this site to mention what I will be displaying. Ross rifles, commercial and target.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Very fine. That's the way to turn stuff up. And speaking of which, if the Gibbs SDS was mounts side up someone's memory might be jogged on seeing that base...

At a glance I would have said that is a 1905-R rather than M. What made you say "M"?

    M for Model 19xx.

A knowledgeable true gunsmith at the show explained the scope mount to me. The mating part is one piece and pivots across the bore much like the old Redfield mount on the 1903A4. The back part has a windage adjustment feature (missing) and elevation is done in the scope.

It was a quiet show with no surprises for me. A few people did not know what a Ross was and a few told me how they could kill you. Sigh. One young gentleman talked with me about writing a school paper for a history class bout Sir Charles and the rifle. There is hope.

If it's Gibbs' work, I think we can be pretty sure that there were the typical two small V blocks that fitted into the gaps in the base. One would have a tapered hole and locking pin with lever and the other a typical rectangular slot for a single large claw. The existing screw countersinks clearly impinged on the rear block and were probably inserted after the scope and mounts were zeroed by the maker; whoever that was. Once those screws were in place, there would be no further movement possible, nor any way of providing for movement as the taper of the screw heads doesn't match the angles of the V block.
