Movies are like that. Movies are not documentaries.
The Blue Max was released in 1966. No movie from that time was even close to reality. There are lots of 'em with both sides using the same rifle. The public usually knows they were supposed to be bolt actions and couldn't tell one from another.

Yup. No one here said movies were documentaries. However, if a movie is SUPPOSED to be somewhat historically accurate, I think it is the duty of the director to ensure it is as accurate as possible. Most of the movie going public is completely ignorant of most things, but unfortunately sometimes crap in movies tend to become viewed as fact because that is what people see and believe. U-571 is a good example. It was actually Britishicon and Canadianicon naval forces that captured the Germanicon coding machines from U Boats, but talking to people who have watched that movie they are now convinced it was Americans. Fiction becomes fact. Anyway, per the original topic here, I realize Ireland didn't have a lot of G98s in stock, but in that case just don't show the German rifles.

Another movie with anachronistic weapons is the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom movie, where the Indian army attacking the temple at the end is armed with #4 Enfields, quite a feat in the 1930's.....

Especially during that time period. Nothing more ludicrous the 60's/70's movies set in WWII. The women are all wearing modern hair styles and make-up, and the men all have shaggy hair and sideburns. (And 20-shot revolvers.)
