What is this star stamp for on this 1903?

I took 4 digit 1903 apart the other day to see what all the mixed parts actually were and I noticed this star stamp on the sight base. The sight base is an early 1905 that was originally for a 30-03 cal. barrel that was reused for the 30-06 barrel from 1906 that's on the rifle now. You can see the old 30-03 pin recess and the re-located pin for the 30-06. The serial# is 6636 and the barrel date is 8-06.
