A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I would suggest it's exactly as stenciled, a tool box. Probably a general issue item. If you go looking you'll find all manner of descriptions and shapes.

That looks extremely well preserved for being 77 years old. Are you certain of it's authenticity?

I don’t think it’s a repro, it could easily have sat in a depot for decades. As a general purpose tool chest it likely would not be removed from service for disposal like a specific kit would after being made obsolete. The lid suggests it’s been exposed judging by the colour.

As an example, in 2003 I found a spring balance in a kit in a cupboard and it was for testing the springs on the I’ll fated Harrier 25mm cannon. It turned out to be a Vickers/Enfield trigger tension gauge. New, never used but still technically in service.
