6.5x50 Japanese Reload Data (Type 38)

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Type 38 rifle and was planning to reload for it. Considering the potential for bulged cases, is it okay to neck size only considering it is a bolt action rifle and not work the brass so much? Does anyone by chance have any reloading date to share? I plan on using 120-140 grain bullets with medium to medium slow burning powders. I do load for the 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 Swede and figured the powder charges are close to each other. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Powders like IMR 3031 or IMR 4895 will fill the bill for you with the 6.5 Japaneseicon. I have found that 3031 does deliver better accuracy in the 6.5 then 4895. The older type cartridges like the 6.5, 8mm Lebel or maybe the .303 Britishicon seem to perform much better with the 3031 as it's close to the burn rate of the original powders. Try 30 grs. of 3031 with a 140 gr. bullet. Sierra flat based bullets seemed to be better to me for accurate shooting.

There's 6.5 Jap data on Hodgdon's site. 100, 120, 140 and 160 grain bullets. Only Hodgdon powders though.
I'll have a look in my old Lyman manual and post tomorrow.
You can neck size only using brass fired in that rifle only. BNIB brass requires checking for length, chamfering the case mouth and FL resizing first.
The 6.5 Creedmoor and Swede Start loads are close to the Jap Max loads. The Creed's SAAMI pressures run to 53,000 PSI/63 CIP. No SAAMI PSI ,but the Jap runs 43,000 CIP. No comparison.

    No sweat.
One of the things I like most about the Lyman books is the wide variety of the data they include.
