    Just awesome

    Allan Cooke
Joshua Dyer (aged 14) was tasked at school to write a poem for Remembrance Day. An hour later (without any help) he produced this.

    One Thousand Men Are Walking

    One thousand men are walking
    Walking side by side
    Singing songs from home
    The spirit as their guide
they walk toward the light milord
    they walk towards the sun
they smoke and laugh and smile together
    no foes to outrun
    these men live on forever
in the hearts of those they saved
    a nation truly grateful
for the path of peace they paved
they march as friends and comrades
but they do not march for war
    step closer to salvation
    a tranquil steady corps
the meadows lit with golden beams
    a beacon for the brave
    the emerald grass untrampled
a reward for what they gave
they dream of those they left behind
and know they dream of them
    forever in those poppy fields
    there walks one thousand men

    Joshua Dyer 2019 (aged 14)

Goes to show that the young can still surprise us.
    Lest we forget

This has got to be shared. An awesome poem from a 14 year old boy.

I wonder how he slipped between the cracks? My bet is his parents/grandparents exposed him to the history that has been expunged from the schoolhouse.
Where did you find the story? You are correct it needs to be shared.

I was just surfin' through F.B as I am in a crane group of wrecks around the world and this was sitting there as I surfed the threads with the O.P saying it to be shared, it makes one believe there will be elements out there to keep the flame of rememberance burning in all our lands long after we are all dust as it should because we owe those that perished and those that still fight for the cause all the respect and help we can give them, because we have got it easy believe you me.

The last few lines reminds me of the very large painting the Australianicon War Museum has of all the dead soldiers ghosts walking through the Menin Gate.....

Reminded me of a letter my Dad sent me in 2017 about a poem a 11th Grade student wrote called the MAN I SEE, took me a bit to find it but here is the letter just as he wrote:

I and 76 other veterans attended a tribute to veterans at the Firth Idaho High School on Monday and a poem had been written and was read by an 11th grade student. I would like to send it to National Headquarters for possible inclusion in their monthly magazine. Below is the poem and I have permission of the student, parents and the teacher who coordinated their program....The student was Courtney (last name removed), Firth High School, Firth, Idaho.

    THE MAN I SEE

I see a man, old and frail,
A man who's seen the face of hell.

He sees the flag, his eyes will fill
with tears of pride as he remembers still

a time when he was strong and brave,
a nation to preserve and save.

He fought with honor quick and strong,
his nights were endless, his days were long.

He looked at death straight in the eye,
he saw his friend fall and die.

His once strong hands knew what to do,
as they fought to save red, white, and blue.

    Tragic stories never told
from this man, who once was bold.

The war is done it's in the past,
but the things he saw will forever last.

The blood, the pain, will not erase,
from the lines engraven upon his face.

He gave us liberty, he gave us life,
    freedom rings through his strife.

A hero he did not want to be,
his duty was to keep us free.

I think of him, and his humbling story,
a salute to him as they raise old glory.

I wish that in my heart he'd see,
how what he gave, means to me.

This man so old, this man so frail,
I thank him for his time in hell.
