Gun Broker Garand I've been watching.

I've been watching this Garandicon auction. Thought I could see a problem with picture #13 that wasn't mentioned in the description.

It sold today and brought more than I had expected. I'd be interested in any comments - maybe I'm seeing something that's not really there, or maybe the bidders weren't concerned? - Bob

I see it too, looks like a spot of weld on the left side of the bolt tail (or is it grease?) and like it was a demil receiver welded together again? Right rear side shows what appears to be weld... Look at pic 12, area just over the clip latch, isn't right either. I don't think you missed anything. Looks like the greased things to try to deceive.

Ouch. Between the crack and the possible welded receiver probably paid 3X the value of the remaining parts.

You can see the backside of this area in pic 3 though a bit out of focus.
It definitely looks sketchy from that side too!

Thanks guys! Exactly what I was seeing, plus I now see it the other pictures that were pointed out. Thought there must be some special value to a few of the other parts to bring that much - sounds like there wasn't. - Bob

Why all the ridges on the rear of the bolt body bottom right of pic its like the bolt over rotates is this normal, also is it the fine line and those little peaks of missing metal at the bottom of the receiver near the wood both sides and a fine crack one can see on top of the charging handle side of the action! Just curious and should the buyer be aware of these things. Just want to learn.

I don't know what the deal is on that bolt with the ridges. I recently bought my 1st (and likely only) M1icon Rifle, and had seen one with a welded receiver once before at a local gun show. I spotted the welded receiver on the GB rifle right away - visible on both sides of the bolt in that top view. I agree with BAR "Jim" that the receiver was likely put together from de-milled parts. Yes, the little "peaks/cracks" are clues, along with the color variation in the weld areas. Here are a couple pictures of mine. Some think I paid too much, but it was less than 2/3 of what that one on GB sold for. Mine's got a few later parts on it, but I'm happy with it. Have a bit of trouble lifting it though, compared to the carbines - it weighs almost double! - Bob

I was watching that one out of curiosity. The seller is local and has had a few rifles for sale lately. 15’ away it looks nice. Up close there is a lot of issues. Most of the parts have a problem. The receiver is almost certainly welded, machine lines don’t line up. The stock is cracked. The gas cylinder is cut. Not much left to work with.
