Help Identifying

I just bought this beat up Mauser from a local shop that in their words were going to "chop it up and sporterize it". I bought it for 160 bucks. I'm not a mauser guy so I have no real idea what I've got here.

I can't imagine anyone going to "Chop" one of these at this juncture in time. I would think if anything, they would part them out first. That would make WAY more money...

Looks to be a very good example of a mid war WWII German 98K rifle.
The left side of the receiver and barrel are marked with a single "eagle/swastika" firing proof and the left side the receiver side wall is stamped "Mod.98" in small block letters.

It has the earlier style all milled components: barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate. It is fitted with a correct laminated stock and handguard.

It is fitted with a cupped steel buttplate. The barrel has the standard fixed front sight with the military tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters.
Not sure why this was going for the chop unless it is "shot out", which even if it was that is an easy replacement to fix. Good luck and buy it.

In looking at the pictures, isn't the receiver ring stamped "SWP 45"? Wouldn't that make it a late war Kriegsmodell made at Bruno in Czechoslovakia? The front barrel band is also very late war Kriegsmodell type. Google "98k Kriegsmodell" and you will find images that look exactly like your rifle. Whatever it is, I think you saved a nice piece of history there!

Probably right there, drinking some of my hoarded COORS Light here this afternoon, brain frazelled already, as there is no Rugby on, but SKY are still charging us for it grrrr.
I was comparing mine to your images as I was cleaning it in my boring (non Rugby) afternoon

I looked it up and yes it appears to be a kriegsmodell 98k. From what I've been able to find its somewhere in the middle of production for the swp 45 kriegsmodell rifles. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Whats the bore like?

The whole gun is filled with dust. It looks like the thing sat in someone's shed for decades with the amount of dust in it. I don't have my cleaning stuff with me right now but from the little I've been able to do to it the bore looks just fine, maybe a very minute amount of pitting but it may just be dust. It still shines and the rifling is still in good shape despite the dust however.
