No. 2 Mk. IV* Canadian Trainer

    Hello chaps,

Some photos of a No. 2 Mk. IV* trainer I won at auction today. I love these trainers for all of their interesting variations. Using my Skennertonicon, I've managed to fill in some blanks on this rifle but if anyone has any additional insights they'd be appreciated.

It looks to be a Canadianicon trainer based on the Cooey No. 10A aperture sight. The Broad arrow surrounded by the C was my first hint at that. Seems that these sights were originally used on the ill fated Ross rifle as I understand it.

The U bolthead is curious. Some debate as far as its significance. Skennerton has two mentions of a "U" marking. The first has to do with the boltheads metal specs differing from the rest of the rifle. Curious what that could entail. Proofed for a different pressure or something like that?

The second mention signifies the rifle belonging to the Canadian Officers Training Corps, University Club. That too could be likely no? Considering the Canadian Cooey sight and the fact that its a cadet trainer with some sort of target cheek rest, which I assume was put on in the civilian world as no photos in Skennerton show one of this shape?

How about the X suffix in the new serial alongside the receiver?

Anyway, can't wait to get her. Should be a fun shooter.

Nice looking rifle. Its unusual that the receiver volley sight is intact.
