The CMP Rifle/Ammo Resale Issue - longish

This one has been around forever; and, you can generally tell when the resellers chirp in on the issue, just by what they say about it. Re ammo: (1) CMP should at the very least require buyers of ammo to sign a paper that states that it's NOT for resale. Sure, this may not stop it, but it will give some federal prosecutor an option to prosecute in an aggravated case. One gun show guy getting a large fine or even going to jail for a false statement would get the word out very quickly.(2) CMP could certainly limit ammo quantities, or get out of the ammo business altogether - and I'm not sure that they may eventually want to do this; it would certainly remove this "problem" for them, and I'm not sure we could blame them. Re Rifles: Here, there is a far more urgent need to demonstrate that CMP is doing the responsible thing for a number of legal and political reasons. I.e., I'm sure that there will be increasing pressure over the next few years to shut down the CMP, or at least impose new restrictions on rifle sales; and, documented commercial sales or re-sales of CMP rifles will do nothing but sharpen the political pressures to do this. It's really simple: CMP rifles are simply not intended for resale and those in the business (or practice) of doing it should be prevented - at least discouraged - from doing it. But, how to do it without being unreasonable? Again, its seems reasonable to require buyers to at least sign a paper that the rifle is not being purchased for resale. How about a sale restriction based on length of time of ownership? However, what about estate sales and the collector/shooter that simply wants to give their collection to their family? These issue s would need to be addressed as well. One thing for sure: Truckload purchasers of ammo and rifles that end up at gun shows in the next few days need to be addressed/limited/prevented or the political climate will soon force changes few of us will be happy with. JMHO.

All the CMP needs to do is keep prices for ammo and rifles in line with the gunshow prices. No more possible profit will shut all of this down. This will hurt everyone but it would solve your issues. Man, this topic has been beat to death.

First of all, it's not a crime to resell CMP rifles or ammo.

Second, the CMP cannot prevent anyone from reselling a CMP rifle.

In the event the CMP discovers that someone is buying rifles with the intent to resell them, then about all the CMP can do is bar that person from purchasing any more rifles from them.

This issue has been discussed adnausim including with Orest Michaels who really doesn't care what you do with your rifle(s) as long as you are not in the business of buying them from the CMP with the intent of reselling them.

By the way, I have no dog in this fight because I have never purchased a rifle or ammo from the CMP or the DCM.

Also, don't forget, the CMP has traded ammo with retailers and some 'resalers' for parts.

i'm going to vent on this alittle. some of the whining lately on the CMP forum is getting old.one bothers me is complaining about the 12 gun limit. first it was the CMP that changed the yearly limit from 8 to 12 with NO limit on receivers,so why should i feel bad for owning more that one? 2nd one, is "CMP is not for collectors", will someone enlighten me why they sell collector grades and correct grades? why have a auction site? why does a WRA cost more than a SA? lot of these new guys (not that i"m a nobel prize winner) would be better served reading their M1 owners manual and not worrying about what someone else is buying. Gentlemen, I think that the good folks at the CMP have more productive things to do than listen to the steady drone of complaints over how some people engage in the resale of products they purchased from the CMP. As Tom noted, it's not a crime and it is not my intent to buy any of it at the inflated prices at gun shows. In other words, it doesn't affect me and I just don't think it's any of my business. If anyone want to ensure a good supply of ammo for their future shooting needs, they only need to invest in some CMP ammo themselves rigth now while it is still available and the prices are reasonable. I understand CMP stopped selling Remington 513T bolts when they received an order for 1000 bolts. Lots of dealers in Anniston, Al.
