    Sporterized 1917 "Sniper" Auction Score

Hi all. Bid on this recently for a project I'm in the middle of.
I thought best case scenario this was wearing a Weaver 330 which I'd keep. Then I'd sell the barrel and bolt to cover my $200 expenditure and maybe make a few bucks.

Boy was I surprised! That's a Weaver M73B1 and a very nice Boyt sling dated 1944.

Really makes you wonder how that scope found its way onto a rifle like this!! This isn't some ridiculously rare prototype, is it?

I think that even for the sum total of parts you did extremely well. If you did part it out...but I don't think you should now... At least shoot it and see.

If it wasn’t caked in nicotine, I would. I doubt I’ll be able to get the smell out of the sling.
The scope should clean up fine and is pretty dang clear. A nice find, for sure.

I had a Husqvarna 1600 show up that was yellow from end to end with nicotine and it cleaned fine. I'd have a good go at it...anyway, good catch.

I put a similar sling with plain cat litter in a zip lock bag for a couple months, shook it around occasionally. Worked well but not perfect, maybe some with the odor stuff in it. Or add dryer sheets to the mix. Also helps dry some older, over oiled slings.
    Congrats on the good find!

That’s a great tip! I’ll definitely try that out.

Interesting rifle, but the last photo is the wrong way round. Could you fix that?

There was indeed such a conversion being outcarried - but by the Austrian Army. And they even re-engraved the designation to be split. But very similar to your rifle! See here for pictures of my „M1917A4“ here: https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=59860
