    No.4 Mk.I barrel markings?

I had the front wood off my RFI No.4 and while there looked at all the cool proofs and markings on the barrel and action.

The old rifle is probably a Maltby made No.4 Mk.I refurbed and remarked in India. Pretty certain the action and barrel are an original WWII assembly. It is a two groove barrel and I cannot see any seams or pins to indicate it's a two piece barrel.

On the bottom of the barrel there is odd series of slash marks / V l l that are like 1/4" tall.

I did some forum searches and couldn't find anything. Does anybody know what the marking / V l l might mean or indicate??

    Thanks HT

    Armourer's assembly markings?

Are these markings repeated on any other components?

I have no idea myself. No...no other slash marks on anything else just the barrel. The markings appear to be neat chisel strikes and could pass for a Roman numeral except for the /

I read the marking with the rifle up side down and muzzle to the left so the V is right side up....maybe 5 inches or so ahead of the knox form. The rifle itself is an amalgam of pieces with a lot of Longbranch parts and some Savage pieces. It could be a 42 vintage Maltby barreled action...there is a crown proof on the barrel with the Maltby stylized M over 42
