    Looking for ShtLE MkI*** bits

    Hi,

As the title says I'm after some bits and pieces for a MkI*** I recently picked up. It's an uncut barrel sporter retaining the bone rear sight, G prefix formerly ER prefix Irish rifle. I've been able to source some bits but I still need a forend, handguards, dial sight and barrel band. The magazine cutoff and magazine case No3 are missing as well but those pop up often enough that I am waiting to get a decent price on them. Any help would be welcome.

    Thanks
    Will

I have restored a few Mark 1*** rifles years ago, I think alot of the G series were wire wrapped and alot of the G series had Mark 111 fore-ends and front hand gurads.

Finding Mark 1*** fore-ends was always very difficult even years ago, once in awhile I did find Mark 1 hand guards at old gunshops or gun shows

I see Mk I rear hand guards pop up fairly routinely on fleabay. The fore-end will definitely be the tough bit to acquire.

I'm away from my parts hoard for the next few months, but I might be able to help out with the volley sight plate if you still need it by then.

RCS, I'm not sure on this one. I know the CR prefix rifles had MkIII rear handguards at least, but the ER prefixes kept the MkI furniture - not sure if they swapped that when they converted them to grenade rifles. I would think not as the CRs also had the MkIII rear sights installed. I'll be shopping the gun shows and flea markets as soon as they open back up, for sure. Edit: I just found a post on here with a still-wrapped ER/G rifle. It has the MkI wood but no dial sight - so that is an option. I may still restore it in its ER configuration.

303, many thanks. I'm keeping an eye on the ePay, we will see what turns up. Several dials have been up recently but none the correct one. Would be happy to purchase one from you.

Isn't this an opportunity to get Mk I fore-ends manufactured by that new Canadianicon outfit [name escapes me]? They said they were interested to hear of new requests.

    Prestigious Wood Stocks?
I was thinking the same thing since I could use a fore-end for a MkI, but I am wary of taking apart an immaculate matching rifle and sending off my most precious fore-end as an example.

Yeah, I think all the G series grenade launching rifles that I have seen pictures of that were unmolested and unrestored were outfitted like ER series rifles; as in outfitted like Mk1***'s. Good luck with the restoration.

    Mark 1*** G series

This rifle was purchased in a GA pawn shop back in the 1980's by a friend who later sold it to me. It had been wire wrapped but later converted back to normal issue, a modified Mark 3 fore-end and front hand guard (also modified inside). The bolt is two numbers off the serial number, bore is excellent. I believe some of the wire wrapped G series were converted back but Mark 3 wood was used. I have seen this stock disc marking on another G series.Attachment 108525Attachment 108524Attachment 108526

@RobD, @AD-4NA Prestigious would be an option but he needs a sample to copy. I don't have an untouched MkI yet - I may end up buying one specifically to send the wood for duplication.

@RCS Hmm, I could go that route then. I'd prefer the MkI setup but MkIII wood is more available. What nosecap and barrel band did they use with the MkIII wood?

My "G" series has the early nose cap with inward curving ears, also a Mark 1*** rear sight but Mark 3 backsight protector. Stock is early with extra holes
which are starting to have hair-line cracks. I do not see a reason why not to use Mark 3 wood

@RCS Good to know on the nosecap, I have several of both the early and late on hand to choose from. Mostly would prefer to do MkI wood because the majority seem to have had it, and because I already have several MkIII and MkIII* rifles and bought this one with the intent of having something a good bit different. Other than that no real reason not to use it, just preference. I'm fine with waiting a few years to complete it vs doing it now with MkIII wood.
