Why the string or cord tied to rifle leading to left. Just a question

To me it looks like it carries on past the rifle on the ground. I took it to be communications wire. Land line for the field phone.

Perhaps a join in the cable and a convenient place to use a field telephone? Would you mark a join in the cable? Looking at it another way would a soldier be allowed to cut a field phone line in order to use a field telephone where he and the phone line happened to be?

End of the phone line...maybe. When laying line you have to tie it back at intervals to avoid it being snagged and drug a mile out of it's original path...not sure that's what's happening but I'm betting it's field phone line.
