I like flamey wood. No, really. This would probably grade in between AAA and AAAA. Here it is in color:

Incidentally, the rifle sold at Rock Island Auctions in 2018.

Then there's maple. This guitar top is rated at AAA.

A few years ago I stayed in the Millennium Broadway Hotel in NYC on a business trip. The first time I boarded one of the elevators I was started by some gorgeous and rare flamed mahogany on the doors. Also somewhere between AAA and AAAA. Sorry for the bad pic - the elevator lobby was very dark.

By contrast, when I ordered a custom stock for my Garandicon, I paid a slight premium for little better than standard wood. I was delighted when the walnut turned out to be somewhere around A-A+.

How is wood graded for flame and figure? In dark rooms, by sniveling little aesthetes with glasses. Don't hate me for saying that: I have glasses... and am something of an aesthete. I just don't snivel.
