    Help deciphering target barrel markings

Hey guys, here’s the barrel I picked up for my L42 clone.

Can you guys tell me what all these markings mean? The internet has helped some but I’d like confirmation.

    Thanks!

A 1970 barrel manufactured by Enfield.
    Barrel part number CR1470

Two arrows 'back to back' with the S = Sold out of service (surplussed)
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

There's something seriously wrong with your breeching-up job there. The breeching washer should be sitting on the shoulder machined in the barrel and there should be no gap between the rear face of the barrel reinforce, the washer, and the front face of the receiver.

Presumably the inside diameter of the washer is too small to fit onto the shoulder. Your choice which one to alter!

I noticed that too, but presumed it may have been unscrewed a turn.....

It is perhaps worth confirming to the OP that he has the correct pattern barrel for a L42A1; the CR1470 Ministry of Supply part number is exactly as one would find on a genuine L42, & 1970 was the first year of large scale conversion.

Yes, and those sale marks were not applied to all them from what I've seen around here. Perhaps only the earlier ones?

A very popular and well-regarded barrel in the target shooting world, with a long life too. Different twists were available, so that might be worth checking.

    Thanks Surpmil,
I’ll figure out the twist and report back!

It is also a 4 groove barrel, not sure if that was standard??

I Haven’t even begun to think of what I might use yet.

I do like flat based bullets for up to 675y.
But I also like Hornadys ELD line up.
I’m a certified “fanboy” of the 147eldm’s in my tikka t3 varmint in 6.5x55!!

I will see what twist I have and work around that.

Don't forget these rifles were only proofed for the 144gn NATO round. In reality they are 303 Brit. When the change over to NATO ammo the range shooters who wanted their rifles converted in Australiaicon had to send them to Lithgow for the conversion,. Not all passed proof and were not returned. If your rifle did not have the proof stamp you were kicked of the mound NO DEBATE.
