Star Gauge Numbers on Early NM Rifles

Someone asked Rick if there were star-gauge numbers on the barrel of his 1915 NM rifle. I have not seen star-gauge numbers on any NM barrels manufactured prior to 1921. The star-gaue mark on the muzzle was added late in 1921. My 1920 NM (No. 1181306/SA 12-19) does not have the star-gauge number or mark. My 1921 NM (No. 1229240/SA 5-21) has a star-gauge number on the barrel but no muzzle marking. My 1922 NM (No. 1232141/SA 11-21) has both the star-gauge numbers on the barel and the star-gauge mark on the muzzle. My 1913 NM (No. 544856/SA 2-13) does not have any star-gauge numbers on the barrel. The star-gauge barrel numbers appear to have been added in Fiscal Year 1921 (July 1, 1920-June 30, 1921) and the star-gauge muzzle marking in FY 1922.

    Jerry,

Alvin Linden #3 here. I think that C 135 is the steel lot code for the barrel. Is it located just under the front sight? I think SG #'s have 4-digits.

Here is the sister to your rifle:

Jim is correct - the C135 is the steel lot code. Rock Island made no National Match rifles during WWI, nor did anyone else.

    ALVIN #1 to ALVIN #3

The number is down where most of the SG #'s were on NM'S... on top under the handguard halfway between the rear sight base and lower barrel band. Also if you look in Brophy's book @ p.210 at his list of examples of actual SG NUMBERS he has numerous numbers with 3 and even a couple with 2 digits. The P proofmark is up approx. 4 ins. down under the muzzle where it usually is. I don't know if it is a steel lot code but even then, Brophy says the P [proof] should be stamped on the bottom of the barrel under the lot code if the rifle is an RIA the rifle is and is stamped like a Springfield location! The mystery continues!!!!!!!

However there is one thing for sure, there is nothing wrong with this low number RIA ACTION OR 1-19 BARREL! Using the long slide 48 @ 50 YDS. with Remington Low Recoil ammo my 57 y.o. eyes shot many under an inch 3 shot groups off a telephone book rest and discarded bed pillows, and one that measured .42, and all with a military trigger. Govt. Training pays off!!! Thanks for the sister RIFLE INFO... Warmest regards Jerry aka Alvin #1

Rick I'm Sorry About That Copy Of Guadalcanal Diary

RICK: I know Sister Mary Frances has sent you to hunt me down for that copy of "Guadalcanal Diary" I slipped back on the shelf in 1965 when it was overdue and I accidently...just happened...to forget to pay the fines. That being said I'm not sure what the fact Remington or anyone not making NM'S in WWI [In fact I was not aware REMINGTON had ever contracted for ANY 1903'S UNTIL MARCH 1941] has to do with my 1919 ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL rifle and the support your facts lend to Alvin #3/Tarletonicon's position. I tend to agree that the numbers while they may be steel lot codes, are not in the correct location? Why? I'm sure I've missed the point but that's nothing new...ask Sister Mary Frances! Warmest Regards Jerry

RIA did make both NM, NRA sales, and Warner Swazy scoped rifles, i have seen a couple NM RIA rifles, they were SG marked at the muzzle, dont know if they were marked under the handguard, didnt think the owners would let me look..
the RIA Sniper rifle was SG as well, it is in a private collection here in Denver.
dont know if the NRA sales rifles were SGd. havnt been able to handle one as of yet.
