    TYPE 46-66 SIAMESE MAUSER

Found this after a long Covid induced dry spell . Type 46/66 type 45 action (based on the low serial number ) with the long tang and Thai hardwood stock (introduced in the type 46)
Appears freshly rearsenaled with no import marks. Filled a hole in my collection I did not know was there.

Looks very nice. I've been tempted to pick one of these up from time to time, but never found the right one. I like the unique sliding dust cover feature these sport. Seems to result in many examples having pitted receiver rings though. I'll keep looking, might find one like yours.

    Nice, the rimmed M98 Mauser!

I almost bought a Type 46 a few months ago, had been eyeing it up for years, and the day I finally decide to buy it, someone else had already bought it. Pretty cool history to these rifles, do you intend to shoot it?

Would like to though the ammo is a bit of a unicorn unless you reload.

Apparently even if you reload the 8x52r cartridge is a challenge to make, just part of the reason why I was curious if you intended to shoot it. Still very nice rifle, thanks for sharing!

It seems the proprietary cartridge has contributed to the relative rarity of these as so many were rechamberd.

They are fairly common in Canadaicon, though we also don't have as large a gunsmithing community as the States does. Part of the reason I wanted the Type 46 over the Type 46/66 was because the 8x50r cartridge it uses is pretty much interchangable with Austrian 8x50r, which I already reload for. The 8x52r as I understand uses a different case head size (though being rimmed you could likely get away with a bit smaller), but its finding a good parent case for it which is hard.

Apparently when these were being surplused a bunch of ammo was being sent over as well, but the cargo ship sank on the way. Don't know if its true or not, but I could see it otherwise what happened to all the surplus ammo.

Yes the ammo is tough. I have a little over a box of it but not confident in it's quality. Reloads. Several cracked necks.

Trying to read the crest stamp. You've got the Chakri stamp above, then below it something something 121. It's not the date which would be four characters and the first two would be 24 or 25.

The Palace Museum in BKK used to have a really great gun and weapon collection, but last time I was there it had all been removed to the army's museum and you can't get in.
