Here in Aus and other countries I guess do not have the luxury of a home defense weapon only stuff you can squirell around the house to either club'em or stab'em but its no problem for them as they are criminals and probably in possesion of a stolen cut down shotty/rifle or H/Gun.
For us here they are not going to wait until you unlock your safes (Bolts seperate) to put your rifle together then unlock another safe for the ammo load it then join the party, if we did plug them then we would be facing some stiff jail time plus the family of the either injured or dead perps suing your A*se off through common law.......
You have my sympathies, mate, but indecision can be worse...

Now THAT was FUNNY!! Made me re-evaluate again. But I keep inexpensive .357/.45 Revolvers and a shotgun as primary home response arms, already. Also for this reason (and a 12 gauge ALWAYS works!). CC

She was right when she pulled that Hi-Point..."Desperate times call for desperate measures! Use it or loose it" That's what the Glock is for, a better grade of Hi-Point

Not to go overboard. In this day and age all the above are good choices. Use whatever you are comfortable with, it will stop an intruded with the correct shot. If you what to be sure how about a TSMG with 50 rd drum? Guaranteed to stop more than one!

Having almost 40 years in law enforcement and having survived my share of relying on our tools of trade, I would priorities my preferences as reliability, familiarity and availability.

I would plan to start with an immediately available handgun and transit to a long arm if circumstances permit.

A good lighting system is a must and the availability of AR accessories is probably superior to those available for the M1icon. I would not assume that you will have house lighting and it may not be wise to turn them on and risk making yourself an easy target for someone in the dark.

In home defence situations shotguns with SG\00 Buck are hard to go past but lack magazine capacity compared to magazine loaded rifles.

My two bobs worth anyway. (Aussie slang).
