Sorry, I mistook it for suncorite. Sounds more like the work of a previous owner! You may find the original finish is intact underneath if you feel brave enough to remove the paint..... I suppose it depends on how much you want to play about with it. Indeed, you can just enjoy it as it is.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Can you make out what the writing is on the bolt handle, just where it joins the bolt body? I was wondering if it might be M47/C? If so, it is probably a later made replacement bolt, but of the same manufacturer. In 1942 BSA were still using the 'B' to identify their No4 bodies (receivers) & bolt bodies.

Looks like a poorly struck M/47C

Yes, looks rather like it. Perhaps a replacement bolt (nicely serial numbered) from the same manufacturer....
