    1950 Longbranch Forend Crack

I picked up a great condition 1950 Longbranch (93L9048) a while ago that I dug out again and there is a hairline crack running along the forend. I'm convinced I read about what causes this but can't find it. I want to fix the reason then fix the crack. Any help is appreciated. There are no other cracks or apparent issues with the draws etc. Pics below.

The scar/dent next to the more exposed peg was probably the cause of the crack. The repair is less than ideal.
