A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Looks more like a carpenter's chest than a barracks box...

That is what we would call in Scotland a "kist" or chest.. It is what you kept your valuables in the days before locks on doors and reasonably secure houses. They were commonly used to store bed linen, although the lock on your one is probably overkill for that.
This is the origin of the foot locker, which achieved basically the same thing in a barrack room, but I think the one you illustrate is too large and flashy for a foot locker. I would think it is a domestic chest, still in use in the early 20c, particularly in rural settings. I would also think a chest such as this would be useful if you were moving from place to place and sending possessions by cart or rail.

I'd bet it isn't military. Like bombdoc says, it's too big. The troopies didn't get that much stuff issued. A 'domestic chest' makes a lot more sense.
