    Range report

Weather cooled this week, and range conditions were perfect today. Temps in the low 70's, slightly overcast, no wind. But first, the backstory:

I bought this rifle in 2015 for $590 at a local gun show. I forget what was going on politically back then, but I remember all the AR-15 rifles, their clones, and parts were in hot demand. All of the old milsurps were being ignored. Ammo was selling like hotcakes as well. 223, 9mm, 308 and 22LR was flying off of dealers tables.

I had limited funds, and had to pass on a beautiful 90L Long Branch sniper (minus scope) that was $1750. At another table, I found this homely girl wedged between two 1941 Johnsons and an M1icon. It is a 1943 No4T that has never seen an FTR. The seller said I was the only guy who looked at that rifle, and he was willing to negotiate. Talked the owner down from $650. Got it home and cleaned it. I happened to have a spare scope and mount, and found the rifle to be a great shooter, in spite of how it looks.

A year later, forum member Seaforth found my matching scope and mount on a different T located in Texas. I worked a deal with that owner, and got the matching scope/bracket for my T.

Rifle is still an outstanding shooter. Pictured is a 10-round group at 100 yards. First round with a clean, cold barrel was high at 2 O'clock. Next 9 rounds went into a cluster measuring 1.75 x 1.5. Handloads were used.

I took it out to 200 yards, but I am too embarrassed to post it. I couldn't settle into a comfortable shooting position, and wound up vertically stringing the next 10 rounds. That group was roughly 2 inches wide by 7 inches in height. I need to practice more, but it's nice to know the rifle is still capable of accurate work.

I’d love to stretch its legs out to 600, but here in southern california, real estate is at a premium. All the really long ranges have been turned into shopping malls, housing, and parking lots. My range only goes out to 300 yards. And since i fell apart like a chinese motorcycle at the 200 yard line, i figured it was best to save that ammo for a day when I’m switched on.
There is one 1000 yard range just north of me, but it has limited access..
My old 600 yard range is now a Chevrolet dealership and a McDonalds!

Usabaker- yup! SBR&G is where I shoot. Im usually there on thursdays.
RoyW-this rifle shoots real good with 150’s. This load is a Hornady 150gr SP over IMR3031. Im not at the house right now, so i dont know the charge weight off the top of my head.
