Hi Entropy. The central slender piece that locates the cartridge charger & bridges the two sides of the receiver is a separate insert. On occasion they became loose & slipping a gob of weld over each end was a sure, if not very elegant, way of securing it. It's surprisingly common....

I have seen a couple with the weld still showing proud of the body, as you say a fix that was all to common for at a factory refurbish.

    Thanks Gents,

Got the opportunity to shoot a few preliminary boxes thru it today. A box of Remington 175 FMJ and a box of PPU of the same weight. Only at 50yds as time was limited. More of a functional check more than anything. The groups for the Remington (which I shot first) were pretty poor. About 3-4”. The PPU was another story however. Nice little clusters well centered but a bit low using the 200yd setting on the sight. Hopefully more time later in the week to shoot it off the bench. Ended the afternoon dinging some 8” steel a dozen times at 100yds. Still a bit low and right. Older eyes and the stock drop didn’t help. I forgot to bring my foam riser pads and vet tape along today. I might have to improvise.

Limited exposure but pleased so far. Anxious to get it stable on the bench and get a decent cheek weld.

Yes, PPU is good ammo and worth using...nice brass for reloading too.

The grinding off of the excess weld is quite typically very crude. Yours is not unusual, & it is all part of its service history. I wouldn't worry about it.
I would hope that is not post-war workmanship, but you may be right. Yes, the gobs of weld & grinder gouges etc. for the charger-bridge are not that uncommon, but I was really thinking of the upper left side of the body (the surface where "U.S. Property" was applied on Savage rifles)

Yes, it may not be post war in every instance, but it is quite a common finding on L42's, so I'm sure quite a bit of it is.

Decided to shoot the remaining box of PPU 175gr FMJBT using the vernier sight and the target listed on this site. 25yds prone. Looks like the adjustments are pretty accurate including the 300yd battle sight. I really need to take it out to the pasture and shoot it at range. Ammo limited at this point until the brass and projectiles show up from Graf’s.

What you'll find is modern ammo shoots flatter than Mk7 ammo hence you have a higher sight setting at a given range say at 600 yds you may find 650 +- to hit the target using the 6 oclock hold it takes time to get the dope especially if you reload as each pill flys a bit different like Highlands, SMK's, Hornady's, Taipans just gotta do the yards.

It is a good practice to have at least 2 pills load data and range carded as if there is ever a shortage of one you can swap to the other I have data for all the above pills took a fair while to get it all down but it was worth it in the end.

Appreciate the posts. Other life projects plus deer season has occupied the past few weeks. I have some preliminary components standing by. A few bags of PPU brass, some PPU 174gr FMJBT, and a box of the 174gr Hornady RN Interloks as well. I’ll start with RL15, although I have Varget and a few others as well if needed. The PPU factory loads clock at about 2400fps from the gun, so I’ll try to start a bit below that and work up. Hopefully I’ll find something that it likes without too much effort. I do long range precision loading and shooting, but I don’t plan to get that carried away here. If I can find a 2moa load that sticks together at 300-400yds...I’ll be happy.
