    zeroing No4 Mk1 with Mk 2 backsight

Have a question regarding POI at 100 yards when shooting a correctly zeroed No4 Mk1, using the 300 yard flip sight.

Based on information found in REME Training School info, if properly zeroed the POI for my rifle should be 6" > POA WITH bayonet mounted.

My 1943 Maltby currently shoots a 3" group, approx 9" above point of aim on the 100 yard range using the 300 yard sight with bayonet NOT mounted. The 303 ammunition I use is made by MEN, which I understand was built to Britishicon military specifications.

I plan on mounting a spike bayonet and test firing the rifle next week before I make any front sight changes to lower POI.

My question is, does anyone have any experience with how far mounting the bayonet typically lowers POI?

    Thanks,

I seem to remember that fixing a bayonet to a No4 has virtually no effect on POI, but, I may be misremembering.

Just for interest - it certainly has an effect on a No1 Mk3, depending on ammunition used.

    Source :
    “Musketry Regulations Part 1”
    1909 (With Amendments 1914)
Issued by the General Staff – War Office.

    Summary :
With a SMLE & with MkVI ammunition there is no effect to the POI when the bayonet is fixed.
With a SMLE & with MkVII ammunition there is a 4 feet Rise in POI at 600 yds when the bayonet is fixed.
With a Lee Metford, or CLLE there is a 6 feet drop, and 2 feet to the right change in the POI at 600 yds when using MkVI ammunition with the bayonet fixed.
With a Lee Metford, or CLLE there is a negligible effect in the POI when using MkVII ammunition with the bayonet fixed.

YES – that is correct – with the CLLE / Lee Metford the POI is NOT AFFECTED when using MkVII with the bayonet fixed, but with the SMLE the POI is NOT AFFECTED when using MkVI with the bayonet fixed..

    For a No4 with a MK2 back-sight the correct POI at 100 yards is 6" above POA.
If you are getting 9" then you can pretty much correct much of this by using a foresight blade 1 size higher (1.87" movement)

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
