    Avro 504 pleasure flights

This privately owned, ex RAF, Avro 504 is believed to be flying from Clacton-On-Sea aerodrome (?) and was one of the aircraft that my late grandmother flew in as a passenger in the 1920's. It is believed that some Avro 504's, in civilian ownership, were converted to carry 2 passengers for pleasure flights.

On one occasion my Gran's brother had a "secret bet" with the pilot that he wouldn't be able to make my Gran scream during the flight with my Gran as passenger. The pilot tried every aerobatic manoeuvre known to man in a vein attempt to get my gran to scream but lost the bet.

No, she flew fairly regularly, for a time, in the 1920,s and I still have her flying helmet and googles. I also have the car member's badge of the flying club that she belonged to. She wasn't a pilot but her brother was; they never flew together so that they wouldn't both be killed in the same accident.

I thought that people here may be interested to see the photograph and that is why I posted it. This Avro 504 is unusual in that it was converted to carry 2 passengers.

Avro did make a couple of prototype versions in the 20's to carry 2 pax (one version with an enclosed cabin for the 2 x pax) so civilian adaptions to do the same was probably quite common.
Its amazing that the 504 continued in production until 1932...!!

And a handful of them were still in RAF service when WW2 started...!!

Fabulous story about your Grandmother as well, and that you have her flying helmet etc
Just the thing for putting round holes in square heads.

I do have some further images somewhere, taken from a different angle, that show the provision for 2 passengers as well as the pilot better.
