    Dave, Some family history-
My Father was from north of Nashville, Springfield. Mother was from Pikeville, Kentucky and grew up in the coal camps. Her best friend until my Mothers death, lived in the next hollow over- now known as Crystal Gayle, younger sister of Loretta Lynn. My Grandpaw was teamed with their Father- Melvin Webb and worked the mines. They did some home brewing to make ends meet. My Father wasn't a musician but became a Roadie, truck driver and gopher for Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, before and for a short time after his service in WWII. When much younger I met many old Grand Ole Opry stars as my Father had back stage passes at the ole Ryman Auditorium. Remember some, forgot many but remember Minnie Pearl, Little Jimmy Dickens, Flatts and Scruggs, Roy Acuff and others. Remember the TV show Hee Haw ? Their was a ole timer on there named StringBean, he was a long time family friend, along with his neighbor Granpa Jones. String, Bill and his brother Charlie and my Father grew up together, my Father being the youngest...... They all called Dad Spud. I remember when we went down for Strings Funeral. He and his Wife had been murdered in their home in Goodlettsville in the early 70's IIRC.
I have a picture of me sitting in Bill Monroe's lap holding his well worn Mandolin.
I'd drive my Wife and kids nuts on long vacations playing my Blue Grass Music !

Some other time I'll tell you how my Grandpa and Melvin protected their 'Area' and how infiltrators were taken care of.

    Don't forget-
    The biscuits and gravy.......
    Fatback and Black-Eyed Peas....
    Grits 'n' Black Strap Molasses.......
    Smoked Crawdads.........
    Catfish and Apricot Gumbo Soup.....
    Homemade Pickled Pawpaws......
    Ham Hocks and Turnip Greens.....
    Grits an' Possum Gravy.....
Sow Belly 'n' Hand Slung Chitlins.....
    Southern-Fried Muskrat....
    Goat Tripe.....
    Gizzards Smothered in Gristle......
And of course a little 'nerve tonic' didn't hurt......

I remember that story of Stringbean hiding money somewhere in the house that the killer didn't get. Didn't a subsequent owner find it in the chimney or something?
My sig: Consider adding IP/S'G's to my registry. I've found 3 sets of consecutives & WILL immediately inform you of one if you won't cut my throat like someone else did, I do it to help us both. https://grandrapids.wufoo.com/forms/zzlnt0519k86xs/

My Grandfather GC from W.V. was straight out of Hatfields and McCoys. He was smart and got started in the life insurance business when it first came out. He built his clientele on the black folks around Bluefield, Uniontown PA and Huntington. He would personally make the rounds and collect the few cents that his customers owed. After a few years he was prosperous enough to own a brick house in Bluefield where my father was born. By the 20s he was a well to do young man with a wife and three sons. Then he decided to invest in real estate in Tampa Florida. He owned several large furnished apartment houses and drove a Pierce Arrow Limousine. When the '29 crash hit he lost everything but the car. We have a photo of them driving that Limo out from Florida to Long Beach. They are standing alongside the car all wearing really nice expensive coats and hats. As my other grandmother used to say, "They didn't have a pot to pi$$ in or a window to throw it out of." On my mother's side were the Hacketts from Ark and the Bruces from Vermont. War heroes, navy heroes (Lt. Frank Bruce, capt of the minesweeper Bobolink) and my great grandfather TP Hackett being a Deputy US Marshall in Indian Territory. His father was Jeremiah Hackett a Major in Federal Cavalry. A Yankee.

I don't know if he had hidden any. He didn't trust banks after living thru the collapse. But he wasn't a wealthy man and lived in a older cabin off Gallatin rd, up on a ridge IIRC, though he did like a fancy car... I believe a Cadillac, I remember my Dad changing the oil on it for him. Again IIRC the house was already trashed when they came home and were jumped by 2 brothers... or 2 cousins, Not sure but believe they were related to each other. String would hit fly balls out to my brother and I. He played ball when he was younger. The kinda guy who would have given a stranger money if they needed it. His wife begged for her life. Being young it was crushing to us. F'ing Trash.

To Add: The Grand Ole Opry doesn't pay performers much. I'd have to look it up, but doubt I'll find what they paid back then. I do know because my brother has worked on many Opry/country singers homes that even today it's a token fee. The stars use it as a platform to promote their albums.
I'll add if I find the amount.

---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:10 PM ----------

    From this 2012 article:

Dan told us that each of the performers and artists are paid $140 per Opry appearance- union scale. Everyone gets paid the same amount, from Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks to Bill Anderson and The Gatlins.

Backstage Pass to The Grand Ole Opry....

If one looks a bit you can find pics of their house still, not much in size. Easy to find and the story is posted. Two brothers...and they didn't do much time for it.
    Regards, Jim

    Thx Jim,
I haven't had the time to look it up, but I knew they were related somehow.
He lived a meager lifestyle but they were happy. I recall him firing up the chainsaw in the house to fill the wood stove.... Need I say more?
There were rumors around that they had money hidden. Ole Grandpa Jones (His neighbor) told my Father those rumors had been around well before they lost their lives.
For memory sake I'll look more up when time allows. I remember the little cabin sitting on the ridgetop, because if you hit, tossed or missed the ball you had a long way down and back up to fetch it.
My Fathers house was in Goodlettsville on a hill top. When he'd leave for more than a quick trip he'd put his valuables in the trunk of the car because the thugs could see him come and go. We lost track of how many times he was broken in to.
Tough area to say the least.....

    Not yet Wayne,
But I know the OP and figured if we got sidetracked it would keep his search bumped up to the top.
    You buying that ?
