    M1 Garand Trigger Guard Stamps T, R, O, V, Y

I've noticed that on various trigger guards there is sometimes a letter stamped on it. I've seen trigger guard with no stamp, T, R, O, V, and Y

I was wondering if anyone knows what these stamps mean. I can find no reference to them in any of my books.

    Thanks

    Bill

These letters start to appear after the drawing numbers were discontinued, I don't believe there is a reference to these letter codes

the last revision number used on the milled trigger guards was revision 3 which last into early 1942. The milled trigger guards without
the drawing number will sometimes be found with a single letter stamped inside the guard, this lasted until the stamped trigger guard
    replaced the milled trigger guard.

The lower band from mid to late 1942 can also be sometimes found with a single letter stamped on the outside

From my observations only, I believe the drawing number on the trigger guard started going away in late January '42 or early February '42.

I have seen two March '42 rifles with the -3 trigger guard but no rifles after that.

I have two Jan. '42 rifles with the -3 guard. One has a J inside and one has an S inside. My Mar. '42 with the -3 guard has a T inside.

I also have four Dec. '41 rifles with the -3 guard. Three do not have a letter inside. Surprisingly, the earlier rifle (402xxx) has either a K or an X or a V inside. Now I believe it is a K.

Again from my observations only, I believe the -3 guard began in Oct. '41. The -1 and -3 guards overlapped in Oct. '41 into Nov. '41.

usabaker, great question about the trigger guard drawing numbers. Makes me go into my saved info and try to see a pattern of parts usage.

    Thanks.

As always, the info from RCS is spot on and always appreciated.

I've thought the codes on the inside of the trigger guards and on the rear sight covers and on the lower bands are inspector codes.

    rebuilding - early days

At some point during the early days, the trigger guards had the ringsAttachment 114073Attachment 114074 swaged back to a round shape and when the large pad in the trigger housing was reduced in size for the rev 6 safety, the -1 was stamped

That could be. It is curious though that there is no documentation on the stampings.

    Thank for the information EdG.
