    Kar98k barrel condition

    Hello fellow milsurfers,

I have been offered to pick up an all matching S/243 Kar98kicon with a dark bore. What can be expected of this bore condition, should it do alright?

I'll bet that bore shoots just fine for military standards. We've seen in past bores that were as new didn't group well and dark skeptical bores shot little tiny groups. If it's in your possession or you can take it out then have a go and see? Can you try it out? If not, I suspect it should shoot well with at least jackets.
    Regards, Jim

Agreed, take ownership immediately and without fail. Then deep clean, repeat, repeat if not clean yet again. It just looks properly dirty. Then if all else checks out, put some rounds through, it. The bore should be good then.

Try some (20-30) downloads. Say 40gr 4895 and a 150gr bullet. Shoot, clean repeat for 20 rounds. Good luck.

I’d take and clean it. Then I’d shoot it. if the bore is just rough, but not too out of specs, it should shoot ok.
I guess I need a new gun to forget about Covshit...

We’re being hit by the idiocy of all people in the “control room” more than from the virus...IMHO.
Tuesday we’ll be “orange” again and school plus the range will open. That is the only thing that matters now.
    I don’t trust anybody anymore...

I have seen and owned a few k98 rifles that I thought were going to be hopeless. However, They have all thus far cleaned up and made decent 100 yard shooters. My secret to success i think has been Ballistol. I have cleaned and cleaned with other products to the point that I would get clean patches at the end. Then, break out the Ballistol and out comes a dirty patch. I use really good Hoppes woven patches and a good fitting jag on a long stiff rod with a bore guide that fits in snug in the chamber end and push all the crud out the muzzle. I will use a bronze brush a little when I have to and heat always helps too.
