Personally I'd do the wooden block fitted inside the clip with the groove at top.

That is probably the simplest thing to do. I like the $10 clip a lot. With regular gas plug in, the bolt locks to the rear with every shot. It doesn't come out as easy as just hitting the clip latch though. It has a tab that you need to pop out with the tip of a round, or a child's pinky, whichever is more handy at the moment.

IMR 4064 is an excellent powder for a M1. I have a lot of it on the shelf I use for M1 loads only. 47.5 grains pushes 150 Hornady bullets about 2650 fps. There is no need to push them as hard as the article you linked.

My current favorite milsurp 30-06 load is 48.5gr IMR4064 with Hornady 168gr BTHP in commercial (non-military) brass - usually Hornady or winchester. My 1903's love this. It is very good in my Garands too, either with regular gas plug or with the adjustable one all the way open to prevent cycling, although I have not yet tuned the gas plug to this load yet.

I remember getting my first M1 from DCM in the old days. I waited almost three years for it to arrive then one day it showed up on at my door with a Postal worker looking for a signature. (In those days in NJ) they still showed up from the Government and was still government propriety "technically". Back then it was the luck of the draw on what you got. I was surprised that an excellent International Harvester showed up! The postal worker who delivered the rifle knew exactly what was in the box and wished me good luck. That was the first of many to come. On Thursday, the weather was great and I took my "fake" M1C out to the range for the first time in 30 years. The rifle was built as a M1 National Match in 7.62mm NATO as M72 NM Ball was getting a bit difficult to get at the time. I found an original M1C scope mount and a commercial Lyman Alaskan 2.5 power. I finished up the rifle by having the USMC armorers at Quantico work on the trigger. I ran through 100 rounds and it was more accurate than I am. I have to get it out to the range more often. It is good to get back outside to shoot. It has been since October of last year that I have shot a gun.

I've been debating tuning one of mine up and sending one of mine to griffin & howe, but their service and parts are awfully expensive these days. The bore on the second one I just cleaned up is pretty sad. It gauges less than my others, but wet service somewhere caused bad pitting inside. It helps that none of the parts match.
