i bought this no1 lee enfield and the receiver is puzzling in that normally on the side of the receiver the holes are vertical but this receiver has just one hole like a no 4.
please advise

Which one are you having problems with ?
The 'single hole' is the standard for Indian made No1 MkIII*
The Indian one also has a variety of holes drilled thru the action (presumably for a scope mount)

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
Yes, home gunsmithing at it's best. The extra holes aren't meant to be there.

Yes, aside from the additional screw holes, presumably for a civvy scope mount, the rifle is 'normal' for it's manufacturer & the time when it was manufactured. There are various little variations in machining techniques that can be seen depending on where a rifle was made & when. The top of the receiver ring is also rounded on (most) Ishapore rifles, yet is flattened off on rifles of other manufacturers. Yours shows this phenomenon as well, but it's nothing wrong or 'bad'.......just a variation like the shape of the gas escape hole.

i bought the no1 mk3 with just one large hole when normally the no1 mk3 receiver has a vertical three hole type as per pictured.
as some suggested, the one hole one is from india, i bought this gun from an indian fella, but how did he managed to get it shipped from india to Canada.
As I said in post #3 this is an Indian rifle made in the Ishapore factory.
The 3 'joined up' hole Gas vent is only used on the Indian rifles.
Ishapore is one of the biggest manufacturers of the No1 Mk3 (Starting production of the Mk1 in 1906) and were still manufacturing the Mk3 into the late 1980's and are still manufacturing a variant today in civilian calibres.
The IOF .315 sporting rifle is a civilian version of the British military Lee–Enfield rifle, chambered in the 8×50mmR Mannlicher cartridge rather than the .303 British military cartridge due to Indian gun control laws.
The rifle is manufactured at Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli, which manufactured Lee–Enfield rifles for the British colonial Indian Army and post-independence Indian forces. It's also made in Rifle Factory Ishapore.
It has a box-type magazine which holds 5 rounds and uses an 8 mm cartridge based on the 8x50mmR Mannlicher, but is loaded with hunting-type bullets rather than military ones.

The Indians have sold 1000's (maybe 10's of '000s) as surplus, the USA has an awful lot of them. Many have no doubt made it over the border into Canada.
