    SA 4.25M Marine

I purchased 4250808 at the estate auction for Harry E. Peabody a longtime military firearms collector. The two day auction had over 100 Garands in it and one caught my eye because it was an 0-66 marked rifle. I got caught up in the frenzy and was high bidder at $1750, ON LINE. I brought it home on Sunday and currently have it field stripped for cleaning and inspection. The CMPicon documentation listed the purchase date of 20 Jan 2003 and the serial number as 4250868 which is not correct. I called Sandy Farlow and explained the problem. It took her 2 minutes to confirm that the CMP had made a mistake on the coa and she mailed me a corrected COA a few days ago. The major parts seem to be all correct: Barrel dated 2 53 breech parked ME 1.8. Bolt 6528287-SA Heat A-13, Trigger Housing 652828 SA, Hammer SA D5546008, Safety SA, Trigger unmarked, Op Rod D35382 SA used on armory rebuilt rifles.

That's what I thought too. Hard to believe that a huge collector of premium Garands would have had this done. Now I start looking for a stock. Pretty sad day for me.....the rest of the rifle is outstanding.

O-66 were USMC rebuilds from Odgen arsenal. A lot of those rifles were issued as SecNav trophy rifles.

What if he bought the stock this way and put it on the rifle? Did CMPicon tell you whether they sold it as a complete rifle, or maybe as barreled action only?

The COA I got from Sandy today says the rifle was sold as a rack grade, so it was a complete rifle.

When I talked to Sandy on the phone and she said it was sold as a Rack Grade, I said hard to believe.....she laughed. I think the grading criteria has change a bit in the last 20 years.
