    Sporter Parts Evaluation

Picked up a SA M1icon Garand that was sporterized. Unfortunately the sight ears were ground off and the receiver was polished. It has a Williams WGOS ghost rear and some funky front sight that fits the GC dovetail. I figured it was good for parts and the price was right. It is a mix of old and new. The receiver SN is 2230XX and the -2SA bolt with an odd REP2 heat lot are 1941. The barrel is 3-51 and looks almost new (I don't have MW or TE gauges). The Trigger housing and most parts are all post war as is the op rod. Everything else is late WW2 or post war. The stock is commercial with a Monte Carlo cheek rest, but the front and rear hand guards are USGI. My real question is the round firing pin. It matches the bolt time frame but I have never seen one before. Given the provenance of the rifle, I don't suspect a reproduction part but there are not enough pics on line to make a comparison. If anyone has an opinion please let me know.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

I know it sounds like just an opinion, but it looks like mine did. I had a SA 328219 with the round firing pin. It was out of the rifle for years so I had a good look at it. This one looks right... It has enough wear to have been used quite a bit, like mine did.

    Jim,

Thanks. Since I don't really need it for a collector rifle I will probably try to sell it and recoup some of the cost of this M1icon. It is actually cleaner than the pictures as there is a slight coating of grease on it. It has an almost black finish except where it rubbed against the rear or the ejector. The bolt has a "G" stamped on the bottom and a hole. Do you have an idea what the "G" was for? The REP2 heat lot is not on any lists but these bolts are out there, some that were LL's.

I appreciate the feedback. It's too bad someone wanted a hunting gun. There are also three #6 or #8 screw holes in the left side of the receiver but no holes for dowel pins. When I heard about the rifle, I thought M1C, but was disappointed. I did the same thing to an Inland M1 Carbine in the early 70's. It is now back in original (close as I'm not sure of what the original stock was) trim except for the scope mounting hole next to the left bolt lug.

No idea about the "G" except probably an inspector. Nothing neat like the first initial of Gilbert Stewart... As for the REP2, mine was a REP1...here.

Other than that Dave, sounds like it could be a good shooter. Yes, someone will want that round FP.
    Regards, Jim
