    receiver repair

thought id share some pics of this 76 Winchester 50 express, that had been abused, someone had broke the stock off, by beating it over a log.
broke the rear tang upper and lower {off} then bubba tried to weld it with a torch and coat hanger weld, was about 1/8 too long, not straight, not strong and not very pretty.
i found a nice original stock for the guy{not cheap} and when i grabbed the rear tang section, it broke off in my hands,
so i ground the old crappy weld out, mached it by hand, and set it with the old broken stock, so it would line up straight, tacked it place,
and then welded it back in place,
got lucky and it matched , and was straight in the first shot, let it cool for a few hours, then finished it, then matched the old finsih best i could, some more time and it will blend in nicely..must say,.it came out nicer then i thought it would..
best thing is its strong, and is safe to shoot.

Excelent work, you can't even see where the weld is. It makes me wonder about some people that try to fix things without any knowledge of how to do it. Very fortunate the recever isn't damaged. My big question is why would someone break the stock off on a log? Is this the same person that tried to fix it?

story i got was his dad or granddad, missed an Elk with the rifle many years ago, and blamed the rifle for his bad marksmenship, and broke it over a log.
i have no idea who tried to weld it before, im pretty good with a torch and coat hanger, but would never try and fix a receiver with that.
it is a great way to fill holes drilled in a receiver though, thanks

    Welding receivers

I cut 1/2" out of a 91 Mauser and made a 22 K-Hornet. You cannot see the weld marks, and I built up the rear bridge ridge. Hart Barrel and Timney trigger. The clip and firing mechanism were the hardest parts to modify.

It will rip the center out of a Bullseye at 100 yards.

When you can't afford or find what you what, you have to make it. Couldn't afford a CZ. Made the whole rifle out of spare parts lying around. The stock is an old Rem 700 stock. Making those scope mounts fit that altered receiver was a bit of fun too. Front ring is a #8 and the rear is a #7. Buehler mounts, rings, and safety.

I like the 91 Mauser. I just mounted a new barrel on a brand new receiver, after cutting the barrel to 18" overall. Put a Williams peep sight on the rear bridge and a dayglow front sight. Glassbedded the whole thing. Drilled lightening holes in the buttstock, narrowed the sporter stock as much as possible, installed a clip button release, and mounted another 91 Timney trigger. I drawfiled the step out of the barrel. She looks good and puts five rounds in 1 1/2" at 100 yards with me shooting. The 7.65 is pert near identical to the 308. She is a great thick brush rifle. I call her "Master Blaster" due to the incredible muzzle blast and stout kick due to light weight (less than 6 lbs loaded). I have a bunch of extra clips I carry with me in my pants pocket. Great swamp rifle because when I hold it down beside my leg, the muzzle is over 6" off the ground.

No, I need another 91 like I need another wife. I converted one to 300 Savage also. That one is deadly accurate and doesn't kick as much.
